“Why do we even bother going through this whole dog-and-pony show trying to figure out who else can do this movie? While almost half the actor-director films at Toronto are by women, everyone knows by now the challenges female filmmakers face behind the camera. While some independent films have secured interim agreements if they agree to union demands, this year’s festival has seen few American filmmakers and actors doing promotion. Despite that, “Woman of the Hour” still landed the first major sale of the festival in a reported $11 million deal with Netflix. Considering that the stability of Hollywood itself is in question, it is hard to determine whether directing confers more security than having to hang around waiting for an acting job.

A crowd frequently spotted on yachts filled the Pool restaurant in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday night for the second annual Caring for Women Dinner hosted by the Kering Foundation. “I said yes because Salma asked,” Oprah Winfrey, a co-chair for the dinner, said as she addressed the room, referring to Salma Hayek Pinault, who is also a co-chair and board member of the Kering Foundation. The space was filled to the brim with tropical plants and marquee names. “I don’t get out much,” Ms. Winfrey said, adding, “I only come out with the intention of using my voice in a way that can be meaningful and helpful.”Inside the dining room, where guests were served a dinner of scallop aguachile and lamb belly, Leonardo DiCaprio sat with Olivia Wilde, Prabal Gurung and Malala Yousafzai, and across from Zoë Kravitz and her partner, Channing Tatum.

NEW YORK (AP) — On a waterfront promenade lined with pink flowers and facing Manhattan’s majestic skyline, designer Michael Kors paid tribute to his late mother with a show honoring the travels the two enjoyed together. Actors Halle Berry, Blake Lively, Tiffany Haddish, Ellen Pompeo, Olivia Wilde, Jenna Dewan and many more were in attendance. But the designer was thinking most of all about his mother, the late Joan Kors, who died in August at 84. “My mother truly was my ultimate muse, my ultimate supporter,” Kors said. "We’re excited at the prospect of joining forces with Tapestry,” Kors said of the consolidation, “and combining and pooling our resources and knowledge to accelerate the growth.

Sasse’s words sometimes tumble out in a kind of techno-futurist patois that can be hard to follow. In response to a question about his perceived invisibility on campus, he veered off into something about the future of pedagogy. Later, he added, “What will today’s generic term ‘professor’ mean when you disaggregate syllabus designer, sage-on-the-stage lecturer, seminar leader, instructional technologist, grader, assessor, etc. ?”Sasse is not the first politician to lead a big public university. Oliver Grundmann, a professor in the College of Pharmacy, told me that members of the campus community were worried because of the positions Sasse took in the past.

Fortescue founder toys with reverse greenwashing

First the $43 billion iron ore miner’s CEO, Fiona Hick, left abruptly on Sunday, barely six months after joining. But in trying to shrug off the mounting exodus, founder and Executive Chair Andrew Forrest, also known as Twiggy, introduces a new risk: reverse greenwashing. His approach to the energy transition is forcing a lot of change on the company in short order. That process surely would have involved rigorous discussions to ensure they were on board with Forrest’s goals and methods. That makes his absolutist twist to climate spin as unhelpful as the more traditional form of greenwashing.

A year ago, the Venice Film Festival had enough star power to put even celebrity-worshiping Cannes on notice. But without all of those celebrities, can Venice still go viral? That puts Venice in a bind, as it’s regarded as one of the best places for Hollywood to unveil starry awards-season titles. (A low-profile Italian film is opening instead.) And I’ve heard of a few more starry fall films that were earmarked for Venice but opted for the Telluride Film Festival instead, since that event is less driven by the photo ops and news conferences that are no longer feasible in Italy.

WASHINGTON — If there were any justice in the world, Donald Trump would have taken the Mug Shot of Dorian Gray. As with Oscar Wilde’s charismatic and amoral narcissist, the Picture of Donald Trump should have been a “foul parody,” a reflection of what the chancer has done with his life. It should have revealed a man so cynical and depraved that he is willing to smash our nation’s soul — our democracy — and destroy faith in our institutions. “Through some strange quickening of inner life the leprosies of sin were slowly eating the thing away,” Wilde wrote of Dorian’s portrait. “The rotting of a corpse in a watery grave was not so fearful.”

Steeped in yearning and chockablock with shocks, “Talk to Me,” the first feature from the Australian filmmaking brothers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, is a horror movie huddled tightly around a story of filial grief. The result is an enduring melancholy that no amount of ghouls or gore can entirely dispel. Yet Mia remains alienated, hanging awkwardly apart from her raucous, thrill-seeking friends, wearing her bereavement like a scarlet letter. The rules are simple: Grip the hand, say “Talk to me,” and a ghost will appear. The spirit’s move-in is easy; the eviction is where things get sticky.

Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike for over a week. Economists are warning that the shutdown could cost the US billions of dollars. The previous writers' strike in 2007 wiped $2 billion off Los Angeles' economy alone. Major films alone contribute around $250,000 to the US economy each day of production, according to data from the Motion Picture Association. New seasons of "The Last of Us", "Euphoria", and "The White Lotus" have already been delayed as a result of the strikes.

The secret queer history of flowers
  + stars: | 2023-06-25 | by ( Aj Willingham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Many of these flowers have deep connections to queer icons or are echoed in other queer symbols. (Even more complex emotions like, say, bashfulness, were associated with their own flowers, which surely wasn’t confusing at all.) It makes sense, then, that queer communities would find both beauty and belonging by continuing this interesting tradition. Today, the lavender flower still appears in newer symbols of queerness. The Japanese word for rose is pronounced “bara,” and experienced a resurgence in queer media in the 1960s and 1970s.

CNN —After playing Shiv Roy in “Succession,” the critically acclaimed TV series that satirically portrayed the uber-rich but morally bankrupt Roy family grappling for control of a media empire, Sarah Snook will star in another production that skewers society. She will play all 26 roles in the “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” which will run for 12 weeks at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from January 2024. Directed by Kip Williams, the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, the play will combine live performance and video “in an astonishing collision of form,” Theatre Royal Haymarket said. “I am elated to return to the London stage in such an astonishing piece of theatre,” Snook said, according to theater site WhatsOnStage. Snook’s “Succession” on screen parents are also returning to the London stage.

I promise there are some simple and immensely helpful ways in which LGBTQ people and allies can take action in June and every month. Don Arnold/Getty ImagesIf you don’t know where to begin with lobbying, look to an LGBTQ or civil rights group doing the hard work on the ground. Commit to learning and teaching: Even members and strong allies of the LGBTQ community can benefit from fresh learning. After all, the LGBTQ community is anything but a monolith — there are so many diverse forms of representation and a landscape that is quickly evolving. It’s also not a bad time to support brands that are supportive of the LGBTQ community.
